Current Definition

  1. one of the Jewish and Christian writings of 200 b.c. to a.d. 150 marked by pseudonymity, symbolic imagery, and the expectation of an imminent cosmic cataclysm in which God destroys the ruling powers of evil and raises the righteous to life in a messianic kingdom
  2.   something viewed as a prophetic revelation
  3.  a large, disastrous fire 
  4.  a great disaster
    an environmental apocalypse

Apocalyse is an odd definition because although the current dictionaries have the correct definition, it’s still used incorrectly. Most people think it means “A great disaster”, when in fact it’s actually a form of writing, characterized by imagary and symbolism. 

Perhaps the most famous version of this type of writing is the Apocalypse of John, the last book of the Bible. The first full English translation of the Bible was the Douay-Rheims
